World weary though we may be – resilience is the ability to rise again and again – to reach out for hope, love and positivity. This extension towards hope, towards healing, towards compassion – is not to turn away from the pain and suffering of others, or to bend in the face of adversity– but a gesture to lift up all beings. I argue that if we take the eagles perch, the high-in-the-sky birds' eye view – we will observe that we are one family, one earth, one collective.

This piece celebrates the belief that under the one blue indigo sky that encircles our planet, our human family can only survive if we turn again and again to compassion, to empathy, to listening, to gratitude and love.

Again and again – returning. This is resilience.

This piece is woven on an indigo dyed warp, that has been double dipped to create a deeper blue for the lower portion. The naturally dyed, rayon colors are woven in with a brocade technique. The gesturing hand is made from handspun paper that is embroidered onto the surface of the woven cloth. The birds are made from bits of handwoven cloth and thread stitched to the surface.

This piece won second prize in the NH Art Association fall juried exhibit. The juror ( Devon Zimmermann, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art) said "This atmospheric quality that the artist creates through their weaving is really stunning. The way that they use color and the woven passages of thread is really beautiful, compositionally so. It allows for a beautiful play of scale, from the threaded below to the celestial forms above."

Within the repetitive methods inherent to textiles, I find a quiet space of engagement -  a place to illustrate universal stories of love, loss and longing, the heartache of the ephemeral, the tender beauty of the natural world and the astonishing gift of bring human.

Exploring the parallels between the impermanence of my organic textile materials and our human bodies, I treat my handwoven fabrics to processes that allow me to be a witness to metamorphosis and to challenge my attachment to what I once deemed as precious. Like the human body, textiles are subject to age and deterioration. Both are permeable, vulnerable to wear and tear, absorbent and resilient. Fabric and bodies both have memory and breathe and have the capacity for of resiliency. I find these parallels compelling and intriguing.

I believe that resilience is grounded in the courage to face the unknown, again and again…. with an eye on a hopeful horizon and a knowing that you are not alone.

This image of a free falling figure sinking into the crevice between two looming tidal waves taunted me for months.

After executing the image in woven form it became clear to me that although this piece might appear to be about impending disaster – it is really about the ability to balance between two opposing forces. This space between divergent opinions, beliefs, religions and philosophies can be occupied with strength and integrity.

A free falling figure sinking into the crevice between two looming tidal waves - this image taunted me for months.

It is within this precarious and precious space that our human family must reside if we are to survive and thrive on beautiful home  - planet earth.

Woven in a brocade technique with two warps, the resist dyed rayon floats on the surface of the grey ground weave. The bits of red, the figure and some of the lines were added by embroidery once the piece was off the loom.

All of the colors, with the exception of some of the embroidery threads, are derived from natural dyes.

I am a constant observer of all things wild and free – and never more so than during the Pandemic. The ocean is my muse, her wide horizon offering opportunity and hope. The forest and field are my solace and now are the source of my palette - I have switched my dye techniques to all botanical dyes. With a maternal instinct I have begun to make cozies for natural objects, protective wrappings that hold stones, pine cones or shells – holding close what I perceive as precious.

In the fall of 2022, I spent two weeks on Monhegan, my annual retreat.

I brought along a large ball of heavy, madder dyed, cotton yarn and posed it in several locations. I also crocheted it into several smaller spheres and photographed these in a variety of locations.

Here a little ball of crocheted yarn sits on the apex of a rock at Gull Cove. There's something about this solo bright red ball that tugs at my heart - the pop of color, the singularity and isolation speak to me. It is also resonant of my larger woven works such as “The Space Between” with a single red figure suspended in space.

After completing "The Blue Horizon", I longed for the simple essence of the sweet line where earth or ocean meets sky. So I created a wide and narrow slice of sky meets ocean. At nearly 10' wide this narrow band of blue recreates the feeling of the unbroken horizon found in the middle of the sea.

This tree grows in two directions, an independent and venerable witness to time. Reaching upward with confidence and strength – this tree feels akin to a self-portrait. Underground, tenacious roots dig deep giving a grounding and spiritual depth.

As I enter a new decade of life, Living My Truth becomes a precious mantra. Above the horizon the colors are derived from an indigo bath, while the rusty orange below is from ceriops/mangrove bark. Creating art using organic materials such as linen and plant based dyes feels aligned with my principle of living a life of respect for the interdependent web of life.

Over the past year I have been moving away from fiber reactive dyes - and using natural dyes and processes with my handwoven linens. This transition reflects my desire to live a life in alignment with the patterns and rhythms of the environment.

For decades imagery of house/home was central to my work. Early in 2015 I drew this image of a house floating away. Something about this house bobbing on the horizon kept tugging at me. Again and again I drew it in my sketch book.

When I finally wove this piece in 2016, I couldn’t decide if the house was sinking, floating or just disappearing over the horizon. When the title “Sinking House” emerged, it became clear that this piece is about abandonment.

The body, made of hand spun paper, not a swimmer. It is being pulled or dragged underwater.

This detail shows the reflective rayon surface contrasting with the light-absorbing linen along the finely knotted fringe.

This fringed edge is inspired by the tzitzit, a ritually knotted fringe from the Jewish faith.

This piece uses a horseshoe crab shell with a delicate web woven onto it. Horseshoe crabs are “living fossils” meaning they have existed nearly unchanged for at least 445 million years, well before even dinosaurs existed. This ancient being represents the constancy of life, the thread that runs through all time.

The horseshoe crab shell is mounted onto a piece of heavy paper that has been printed with elderberries and rusty objects in a chaotic pattern. As a material paper is subject to heat, moisture, and staining. It tears easily and responds to impressions. It is impermanent and changes easily - like our organic, natural world.

I believe the contrast of the hard, ancient crab shell with the delicate web against the malleable, stained paper creates a dialogue. This dialogue is my effort to reach across the divide of culture, age, ethnicity, religion, politics and gender.

From my perspective every effort to cross this divide is critical to the survival of our species. Let’s hope that our human race gets to be 445 million years old some day - to continue to make art and to have these difficult conversations.

In the center of this piece is a floating body suspended in a cathedral-like arch of embroidery stitches and a sea of indigo blues. Almost daily I swim to a small island in the protected waters of a local cove. Before I return to shore I roll onto my back to float.

Fully supported by the salty water, held and cradled, I feel suspended as if in zero gravity. There is no perceptible sound save for my breath. This experience is as close to merging with oneness, or “Dissolving Boundaries” as I have experienced.

I choose to work with organic materials such as paper, linen and cotton that are especially susceptible to change. Pushing this characteristic, I intentionally subject my textiles and threads to humidity, rust, abrasion, soil and sunlight. I find that this deliberate abuse of my “precious” fabrics confronts my own attachment to permanence and my futile attempts to halt the aging process in my own body.

Through my work I address universal and timeless themes such as longing, love, regret and grief by employing traditional textile techniques such as weaving, spinning and dyeing.

Here the ground fabric is my handwoven linen which has been dipped in indigo and ceriops dyes. It has been bleached, rusted,painted and embroidered.

Change and metamorphosis, the common denominator for all life, are at the core of my artistic exploration. If there is one lesson to learn from Covid-19, it is that we are all vulnerable and mortal. I suggest that when we develop an awareness of our common vulnerability and our mortality, perhaps we will adopt a wider compassion for all – dissolving boundaries.

In allowing my textiles to be vulnerable and exposed to time and the elements - I have become more tolerant and patient myself.

Over time my creative exploration has shifted from acknowledging impermanence to exploring change and growth. This flock of birds is a subtle nod to letting go, flowing with the changes as well as being a witness to the beauty of nature.

As a textile artist I am conscious of working with materials that are subject to change from light, humidity, abrasion and temperature.

Each row of this piece has embroidered hand gestures for a letter. The top row is L, the second row is O, third is V and the fourth is E.

These embroidered letters were subjected to a variety of situations to see what would happen to the threads. These processes included: weather by nailing to a tree for 5 months, bleach, rust and burial in dirt.

This piece illustrates that LOVE truly does endure weather and time.

This piece is a letting go - a release of the house image that has been central to my work for decades.

What began as a time honored house shape in my previous works has shifted to a simple box.

The houses/boxes are hand-woven fabric swatches that are appliqué onto the woven surface. The large white half circle, a reference to the moon, is woven in a tapestry technique with a rayon weft on the linen warp.

Like a shell at the bottom of the ocean floor, this figure is hiding in fear, or perhaps in a posture of rest or gestation.

The moire effect from the rayon weft supports the watery imagery of this piece.

Twenty six embroidered letters on antique linen scraps, inspired by American Sign Language (ASL). This nine yard scroll is presented like a Torah, rolled onto two wooden dowels. One can view the entire alphabet or unroll a portion at a time to view sections. When unrolled the full scroll is 330” – but it can be displayed with only a small portion unrolled.

The process of making these embroideries starts with a reflection on what is present in my life, my environment and my heart. From this reflection I create a drawing based on the ASL hand gesture.

By using the ASL hand positions I continue connecting to the human body, illustrating my own hand in these poses. This drawing is then traced on to the antique linen square using a washable pen.

Ten years ago I sailed across the Atlantic from South Africa to the Caribbean. That wide endless horizon has been pulling at my heart ever since. I created this piece to mimic that view.

Each panel is 6 feet tall by 4 feet wide - the entire piece stretches across 16 feet and is 6 feet tall.

With HELP, my embroidery work has shifted from using a foundation of antique linen to my hand woven linen. Continuing to use my own hand with sign language, this series moves from alphabet letters to spelling words,. This four part series spelling HELP is a fervent prayer for planet earth and those who inhabit it.

This is Letter L with imagery to illustrate the element earth.

Portable stitching allows me to "get out of the house", to work beyond the shelter of my studio and to connect with a larger community.

Through the materials and metaphor of textiles, I hope to make visible our connective tissue and common threads.

The design for this piece came to me as a fully developed image about 8 months after my brother was killed. We had recently completed a trans-Atlantic crossing in a 43’ boat from Cape Town, South Africa to Barbados.

As I grieved for my brother making art became my refuge. Here is a golden house (a place of refuge/safety) holding a reclinging body. Upon closer inspection the body is actually negative space - a place where a body once was.

“What You Will” is the first piece in my personal and creative transformation. In the center of this piece is a human body as negative space; my attempt to comprehend the temporary and ephemeral that is evident in all natural/organic matter.

The curve of the Earth and the house are woven in a brocade/modified tapestry technique with a rayon weft. This process requires two warps on the loom, both of which are hand-dyed prior to weaving.

The rayon weft is inlayed on the surface of the indigo blue linen. Small antique buttons reference stars and a bigger Universe.

Unhinged: "to open wide as if removing supporting hinges. At the time that I made this piece, I felt at a loose ends and adrift; unhinged.

The house which has long been my symbol for safety and security has titled and slipped away from Earth - become unhinged.

In this second piece of the Unhinged series, the house has drifted further from Earth, deeper into space, tipping and tilting.

The body has begun to disconnect from the security of the house - caught only by the ankle of one foot. Here the body is an outline similar to that found at a crime scene - a dotted outline - a place where a body once as.

The body outline is made of hand spun Shifu paper and couched on to the surface of the linen.

Tumbling out of the hand are antique buttons and tiny beads referencing stars.

Like a witness to a slow moving story, I envisioned the "Unhinged" series one piece at a time. In "Unhinged #3" the body and the house have almost separated and there is a feeling of letting go or release.

The subtle gradations of blues in the background cloth are accomplished by a thread by thread mindful transition of my precisely hand-dyed linens. I favor a sparse imagery that highlights the simplicity of this background, plain weave cloth.

The body is no longer a dotted outline, but a vibrant, red Shifu thread. The physical gesture here feels more fluid - almost as if this letting go is filled with trust and a willingness to live in uncertainty.

In this second piece of the Unhinged series, the house has drifted further from Earth, deeper into space, tipping and tilting.

The body has begun to disconnect from the security of the house - caught only by the ankle of one foot. Here the body is an outline similar to that found at a crime scene - a dotted outline - a place where a body once as.

The body outline is made of hand spun Shifu paper and couched on to the surface of the linen.

Tumbling out of the hand are antique buttons and tiny beads referencing stars.

Like a witness to a slow moving story, I envisioned the "Unhinged" series one piece at a time. In "Unhinged #3" the body and the house have almost separated and there is a feeling of letting go or release.

The subtle gradations of blues in the background cloth are accomplished by a thread by thread mindful transition of my precisely hand-dyed linens. I favor a sparse imagery that highlights the simplicity of this background, plain weave cloth.

The body is no longer a dotted outline, but a vibrant, red Shifu thread. The physical gesture here feels more fluid - almost as if this letting go is filled with trust and a willingness to live in uncertainty.

The house creates a refuge for the tree while the tree anchors itself in the earth, growing healthy roots.

This piece is one of a series of two that explores the concept of house/home/shelter as a platform for growth and development.

Sheltered safely inside the house, the tree extends new roots below ground.

In “Beyond Home” the tree has punctured the roof of the house, extending upward as well as digging roots deep into the earth below.

The metaphor of home/house has long served my visual narrative. In this two part series, I begin to explore moving away from the security of home - pushing beyond home.

The roots and precipitation are made from hand-spun paper threads ~ made from paper with words about safety and vulnerability written on it prior to spinning.

There are gold and metallic threads embroidered among the roots.

There was something about this old house that immediately got under my skin. I was captivated by the detail of the wood carving, the artifacts, the stories and Wallace Nutting’s photographs of the women posing in the house.

This piece uses several design elements from the house as well as photographs that mimic Nutting’s images.

I wrote about my prayers for those who had suffered at the hands of nature and from their socio-economic situation.

I wrote about the devastation that had befallen whole communities and a culture. I wrote about my own personal worries of being a mother of adolescents.

This piece is indicative of the work I did in the 1980s. Most of those works explored landscapes imagery though simple lines.

In the 1908s I used a double weave technique to make horizontal raised lines, pleats, over a vertically striped warp.
