Stone by stone

As humans we love to collect things. Rocks, stones or pebbles often fill one’s pocket after a trip to the beach, mountains or a river bed.

We all love to toss those rocks into a body of water.

To skip the flat rocks across the glassy surface, to witness the consecutive circles that ripple out from a stone plopped into the water from a pier or bridge.

My recent work, INDRA’S NET, plays with this concept of stone upon stone, building to create a larger image. Each stone independent yet connected and vital to the whole by creating one image.

According to Wikipedia and Bryan Van Norden, “in the Huayan tradition, Indra's net is "adopted as a metaphor for the manner in which each thing that exists is dependent for both its existence and its identity upon every other thing that exists.”

There is a wealth of information on this concept of interconnectedness and how the individual jewels (stones in my case) reflect the beauty of all.

So fall in love with one stone and also remember to step back and see the larger cosmos of beauty that we create together.

Fall in love with one stone and yet step back to witness the beauty of the whole.
